Dr Wybren van der Wal

Netherlands | SAKS | Knee

I am an orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty in knee sports surgery. I completed a dedicated knee fellowship under Dr. Daniel Saris at Utrecht University Hospital. Currently, I work at a hospital affiliated with the Dutch Olympic Committee, where I treat athletes of all levels, including Olympians—something I particularly enjoy as a former elite athlete myself.

In 2023, I had the honor of being selected as one of the ISAKOS Global Traveling Fellows, an enriching experience guided by the inspiring Ponky Firer as our godfather. I am presently pursuing a PhD focusing on the influence of concomitant pathology in ACL injuries, which I expect to complete in 2026.

My academic involvement extends to various national and international research collaborations, and I’m an editorial board member of the Arthroscopy journal. In collaboration with a colleague, I co-developed the Knee Arthroscopy Belt to enhance ergonomics during arthroscopic procedures.

My connection with South Africa dates back to a medical internship in Cape Town. Since then, I’ve returned several times, including a memorable five-month overland journey by car from the Netherlands to Cape Town in 2014. I’m excited to return once more for the South African Knee Society Meeting at SAOA—to share insights, exchange ideas, and continue learning.
