Membership may be granted to any person who is a medical practitioner and is registered within the Republic of South Africa as an orthopaedic surgeon or who has a special interest in the practice of orthopaedics.

Medical practitioners who have a special interest in the practice of orthopaedic surgery but have not yet qualified as orthopaedic surgeons.

Medical practitioners who are registered as specialists in the field of orthopaedic surgery

Medical practitioners who have a special interest in the field of orthopaedic surgery or are registered orthopaedic surgeons and are resident outside the Republic of South Africa.

Full or Affiliate members who have retired from active practice or attained the age of 70 years.

Professional Allied to Medicine membership may be granted to scientists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and researchers with a special interest in orthopaedics. Allied to medicine members shall retain all the rights and privileges of membership of the association but shall not be eligible to vote at meetings.

Full-time State Consultants are eligible for a 50% reduction in membership fees, inclusive of registry fees, provided that they earn no income outside of their State salary and that they submit a letter from their Head of Department to this effect.

The SAOR Access membership is granted to specialists (e.g. neurosurgeons, and plastic surgeons) with an interest in orthopaedic surgery to contribute by inputting data into the South African Orthopaedic Registry. This category is not open to orthopaedic surgeons. SAOR Access members can not vote and do not have access to any other SAOA membership benefits.
