The SAOA is committed to the professional development of its members and the continued improvement of the health care of their patients. The SAOA combined registry, the SAOR, started in June 2019. It aims to advance the practice of orthopaedic surgery performed in South Africa, provide best practice guidance to its members and to ensure consistent levels of patient care. The SAOA has launched a groundbreaking, world first, combined orthopaedic registry. This is NOT just an arthroplasty registry but includes ALL orthopaedic procedures.
Surgeons can submit their patient data to the registry and build an evidence-based portfolio of their clinical practice. The process is simple and customised, so input is minimal. The clinician controls the data going in and therefore its quality. The registry is a helpful, real-time reference and research tool for academic institutions and individual clinicians alike. Its data can be access and processed immediately. Any data extracted from the registry will be anonymised and goes through a rigorous ethics process before being released.
